German and Polish rescue teams searched without much hope Friday for signs of life inside a Polish ferry that capsized during a violent storm in the Baltic Sea. The German navy said 52 were believed dead.

The ferry Jan Heweliusz capsized before dawn Thursday about 20 miles east of the German island of Ruegen while en route from Swinoujscie, Poland, to the Swedish port of Ystad.Nine people were rescued, all crew members plucked from the storm-whipped, icy waters. Experts said the chances of finding anyone else alive were virtually non-existent.
