Police booked a 15-year-old juvenile into the Youth Detention Center Thursday night on allegations that he attempted to kill his mother and stepfather.
The parents were in bed when the mother was awakened by noises. In the darkness, she saw someone in a ski mask beside the bed holding a gun to her head. The person was gently cocking and releasing the trigger, causing it to make a clicking noise but not to fire. The gunman then commented about how he felt ignored, police spokesman Gerald Nielsen said.
The mother recognized her son's voice. At that point, the stepfather woke up, and both parents attempted to sit up.
The son threatened to shoot them if they did not lie down. The mother, however, jumped out of bed and grabbed the loaded .38-caliber pistol her son held.
He then ran out of the home. The juvenile had apparently turned the power off in the home and disabled the telephone before he threatened to kill the parents. He'd also loaded the family's pickup truck with his belongings and taken keys to the other vehicles.
The parents restored the power and phones and called police. By the time police arrived, the juvenile had returned. He indicated he'd planned to leave the state, Nielsen said.
Police arrested the juvenile on two counts of attempted homicide.
