Even when the toilet costs $23 million, some folks can't seem to remember to put the lid down.

The crew of four men and one woman aboard space shuttle Endeavour got a scolding when Mission Control on Thursday noticed that a fan on the experimental new toilet was still running - meaning the lid was still ajar.Mission Control's Carl Meade had astronaut Gregory Harbaugh take care of the problem.

"And Endeavour, in the future, we would like you to make sure that that lid is closed and that fan cycles off, if you could remember," Meade said.

"OK, Carl," Harbaugh said. "That's a good reminder."

There was no word from NASA on which astronaut was the offender.

On Thursday's "Tonight" show, Jay Leno joked: "Everything about that thing is expensive. You know, it's even 5 million bucks for that little strip that says `Sanitized for your protection' that goes across the top."

On Friday, Endeavour's astronauts rang in the Clinton administration a few days early as scientists on the ground worked to salvage an experiment using a $14 million X-ray spectrometer.

Early Friday, the astronauts videotaped themselves delivering a brief message and ringing a small replica of the Liberty Bell.
