Salt Lake County firefighters spent three hours Friday fighting a stubborn two-alarm blaze that caused $60,000 damage.
John R. Stewart, 6400 S. Canyon Cove Drive (3540 East), called 911 about 1:15 p.m. after noticing smoke coming from a light fixture, said Battalion Chief Tom Bogle. The family had built a fire in the fireplace of the home and the blaze somehow spread to adjoining floor joists through an open-air space. The fire then spread between the floors, between the walls and into the attic.
Twenty-eight firefighters were called to battle the blaze. They had to tear into the walls and cut the ceiling and roof to locate the fire, Capt. Dennis Steadman said. "It didn't matter what they opened up, there was fire there," he said.
The damage was contained to a main floor family room, a master bedroom above it and the fireplace on the second level.
