Firefighters had to resort to long-distance tactics while battling a blaze at a maintenance shed Saturday night.
The fire gutted a shed at Norwood Transportation Inc., 2232 S. 7200 West, with the lack of nearby fire hydrants hindering the efforts of firefighters from Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City and West Valley City.Salt Lake County Fire Capt. Jim Anderson said fire trucks were forced to travel several blocks away to the closest hydrants, fill up tanks with water there and then shuttle back to the fire.
A deputy sheriff passing by noticed the fire and reported it at 10:33 p.m.
According to owner Elwood Peterson, the shed contained oils and tools. Nine semi-trailer trucks were parked nearby, but only one was slightly damaged in the incident.
The fire involved no toxic chemicals and didn't threaten neighboring buildings. Peterson estimated damage to the shed at $50,000.
There were no injuries, and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
