The Buffalo Bills defenders got a heavy dose of Walt Corey's Super Bowl game plan during their workout at Rich Stadium yesterday.
The offense won't receive its complete game plan until Monday in Pasadena, Calif., but Corey, the Bills' defensive coordinator, wanted to give his players a long look at the Dallas Cowboys' complex offense yesterday so they would have a couple of extra days to prepare. It's a good idea, the players say, because the Cowboys' offense presents a unique challenge.
"There's not just one aspect to prepare for," Bills defensive end Bruce Smith said. "They're a complete football team."
Defensive back Mark Kelso said the Cowboys don't give a defense a lot of different looks, but that is their strength.
"They give you the same look as far as their formation, and run different things off the same look," Kelso said. "It requires a great deal of discipline."
Kelso said the Bills can't afford to go into the game thinking "stop the run," because the Cowboys pass so well, and they can't think "stop the pass," because the Cowboys run so well.
"They move the ball whatever way you permit them to, run or pass," Kelso said.
BENNETT STILL OUT: The Bills practiced in shorts for about 11/2 hours yesterday, but without linebacker Cornelius Bennett, who remains out with a sore hamstring.
The Pro Bowl linebacker also missed practice Wednesday and will be out again today. He is expected to resume working out with the team Monday in Pasadena.
LEVY LOSES COOL: Bills coach Marv Levy doesn't often lose his cool. But then he's not often confronted by an idiot from MTV.
The cable TV station, branching out from its usual menu of music videos and politics, is, like, into the Super Bowl, man, so it had a crew outside the Bills' locker room at Rich Stadium yesterday.
MTV "personality" Steve Isaacs tempted players into interviews with the offer of free T-shirts, then asked such hard-hitting questions as, "How far can you throw me?" which an offensive lineman had the privilege of taking.
Answer: Not nearly far enough.
Levy, accustomed to having minicams thrust into his face, unwittingly granted an interview.
He frowned a little at the first couple of oh-so-hip questions, but answered them. But when Isaacs asked Levy his opinion on the ugliest Cowboy, the coach abruptly terminated the interview.
