Utah
- Swimming - The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team defeated Oregon State University on Saturday by the score of 151-76. Individual winners for the Utes were: Danayale Griffiths, 1650 freestyle (18:43.36); Xioa Hong-Wang, 50 freestyle (24.78) and 100 butterfly (56.79); Shannon Mandell, 100 freestyle (56.45); Marla Peterson, 500 freestyle (5:21.74). The victory raised the women's record to (2-5).
Weber State
- Tennis - Weber State's men's and women's tennis teams played Idaho State Friday at Pocatello, winning one and losing one. The women's teams defeated Idaho State 9-0 while the men lost to the Bengals 5-2.
In the women's match in No. 1 singles, Weber State's Nadine March (ranked 11th in the Central Region) upset No. 10 ranked Alex Iasuda of Idaho State in three sets: 4-6, 7-6 6-3. Iasuda is the top ranked player in the Big Sky Conference.
BYU
- Women's basketball - Paced by 18 point performances by sophomore guard Thais Kidd and senior forward Kari Lloyd, BYU's women's basketball team picked up a 78-75 win over Wyoming Saturday night in Laramie.
The win leaves BYU as the only undefeated team in the WAC with a perfect 4-0 record. Also scoring in double figures for the Cougars were sophomore center Debbie Dimond and freshman forward Kim Henry .
- Wrestling - After leading midway through its match with Cal Poly, the BYU wrestling team could not hold on for the victory, losing 18-15.
The dual meet came down to the heavyweight match in which Cal Poly's Seth Woodill, ranked seventh in the nation, pinned Jim Ellis of BYU with 2:50 left in the third period.
Phil Armstrong provided a bright spot for the Cougars as he decisioned Jake Gaeir, raising his record to 12-2 on the season. Shayne Ford (167) won his match 7-2. BYU, now 4-5 in duals, will next face Boise State at home Febuary fifth.
- Track - BYU's Cathie Guischard, Trinidad, W.I., exploded into the track season at the Utah State Wilson Motor Invitational Saturday with a NCAA provisional qualifying time and personal best in the 55-meter dash.
Guischard, who holds or shares five records at BYU, covered the distance at the Nelson Fieldhouse in 6.92 for a personal best and first place in the event, passing the NCAA provisional standard of 6.96.
Cougar freshman Tiffany Jackson placed third in the event (7.23), Brooke Stanton was fourth (7.31) and freshman Jennifer Jenkins, Sandy, was fifth (7.33). Veteran Jennifer Swan won the 800-meter run (2:20.04) and newcomer Beth Worlton was fifth (2:26.34).
