A herd of 50 enraged elephants trampled a man to death in the Indian state of West Bengal, then unearthed his corpse and four others from a graveyard three days later, The Statesman newspaper reported Saturday.

The man had hurled stones at the elephants as they were peacefully passing in Bankura district in West Bengal state, the newspaper said.The elephants trampled the man, then exhumed his corpse, it quoted officials as saying.

District Magistrate of Bankura Tapan Burman said the elephants had uprooted plants in the cemetery and tasted salt, which is often used in Indian burials.

The herd, which has reportedly killed some 30 people, migrates to West Bengal from Bihar state every winter.
