Syndicated humor columnist Erma Bombeck treated herself to
a $1.5 million vacation home in Carmel, Calif., to be closer to the water, but she got more than she bargained for during her first stay there."It rained the entire time I was here," Bombeck said. "Northern California owes me a big one because wherever I go, I end the drought."
Bombeck, 65, is known for her newspaper columns and books.

She and her husband, William, live most of the year in Arizona. They fell in love with the Monterey County coast while visiting in the early 1980s.
