A fire Sunday afternoon did an estimated $30,000 in damage to a Centerville garage and its contents, but firefighters from South Davis Fire District prevented the blaze from spreading into the home.

Capt. Paul Richards said the 2:30 p.m. fire started when a van in the garage of the Brian Ince home at 1148 N. 300 East was left to warm up and the tail pipe apparently ignited a tarp covering a woodpile. The family left the house, Richards said, and the alarm was turned in by neighbors.

The fire was fed by several containers of gasoline and a propane tank in the garage that vented from the heat, discharging the flammable gas, Richards said. The garage also contained two snow blowers, two jet skis and other items that were destroyed, he said.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to fully extinguish the blaze, Richards said. Three engines and 25 firefighters responded. There were no injuries, and damage to the attached house was limited to smoke in one room, he said.
