Volunteers are needed to help children with disabilities to participate in recreational and learning activities as part of "Recreation for All Handicapped's Little Trickers" program.
Director Kathy Edwards said the program serves children ages 4 to 12 with developmental delay or behavioral problems. "We have an 8-year-old boy that goes to `regular' school and has four teachers. When his parents attended a parent-teacher conference, all four teachers told them how he had been behaving much better, and they praised the Little Tricker program for this accomplishment," Edwards said.Little Trickers is the fastest-growing program in the area. Without volunteers, the program would not be in existence, Edwards said.
Volunteers do not need to have experience working with disabled individuals but they must be patient and enjoy working with children. Individuals or groups can help on a regular or one-time basis.
Volunteers are needed every Wednesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Other volunteer opportunities in the community include:
- Community Action desperately needs volunteers to collect and donate diapers - cloth or paper. If cloth diapers are collected, medium-size plastic pants and pins are also needed.
- Volunteers are also needed to collect and donate paper products such as paper towels, toilet paper and facial tissues.
