A regiment of Indian army border guards marches past the reviewing stand in New Delhi, where British Prime Minister John Major watched India's Republic Day parade from behind bulletproof glass Tuesday. It was the first time that a British prime minister was the chief guest at the annual parade since India declared itself a republic 21/2 years after independence from Britain in 1947. Police and paramilitary troopers lined the route of the parade. The extraordinary security was prompted by an alleged Sikh extremist plot last weekend to blow up government buildings with a sophisticated Japanese remote-control device while Major watched the parade.
