Memorial services will be held Wednesday for Manford A. Shaw, 86, former president of Westminster College, who died Sunday in University Hospital after a long illness.
The services for Dr. Shaw, who headed the college for 71/2 years and who had been associated with the campus in various capacities for about 56 years, will be held at 3 p.m. in the Jewett Center on the campus, 1840 S. 1300 East. A private burial service at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park will be held before the memorial service.
Dr. Shaw was a member of Westminster's board of trustees for more than 25 years, serving as chairman from 1965 to 1968. In January 1968 he became president, serving until July 1, 1976, and continued as chancellor until his death.
He was born in Tremonton, received a bachelor of arts degree from Yale University in 1929, a juris doctorate in 1942 from the University of Utah and an honorary doctor of laws in 1957 from Westminster.
After working for Dictaphone Sales Corp., New York City, he returned to Salt Lake City in 1932 and for 10 years was vice president of E.B. Wicks Co. He was a part-time lecturer at the U. and at Westminster. He served in the Air Force during World War II, graduating from Command in General Staff School. Following military duty he established and was president of Shaw Inc. Realty and Land Development Co.
Also, he was president of National Mortgage Co., the Salt Lake Board of Realtors, Utah State Realty Association and the Utah Association of Sales Executives.
He was a member of the Utah State Bar Association, the board of trustees of Christ United Methodist Church and of the Salt Lake YMCA. He was co-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, from which he received the Brotherhood of Man Award in 1982.
