I am a retired federal government employee. I am in favor of Gov. Leavitt's offer to refund our applicable state income taxes with his suggested 6 percent interest. His proposal also includes retirees who did not file for reimbursement. Those are generous offers.
To insist on the pound of flesh of 12 percent interest will only prolong the issue and cloud the outcome. It is obvious who will benefit from extended litigation. The federal retirement system is generous to its recipients. We should recognize that this windfall is not based on equity to private employment taxpayers but upon legal technicalities and interpretations. Let us all be good citizens and accept a reasonable settlement.
