A rancher in Garfield County, Colo., who prefers to remain unidentified to protect his animal friend, plays in a pasture with a bull elk he's named Valentine. The man took in the elk, which was in ill health, last year. Apparently, the experience made the animal fond of both its keeper and the ranch. Now, the elk hangs around like any other ranch hand, er, hoof, even though it's free to leave at any time. The big animal not only follows the man around the ranch, it even enjoys playing fetch with the rancher's hat.
