Eugene Wood, M.D. passed away Wednesday, November 17, 1993, at his winter home in West Sun City, Arizona.

Dr. Wood was born February 27, 1913, to John M. and Sarah Elizabeth Wood in Murray, Utah.In his youth, Dr. Wood was an accomplished athlete, scholar and politician. While attending Murray High School, he was awarded a "Letter" in four sports for three years and was named to the all-State basketball team in 1931, the year Murray High School won the State Basketball Championship. Eugene Wood was Studentbody President of Murray High School in 1930-31. He played Varsity football and basketball his Freshman year at the University of Utah.

He graduated University of Utah, 1935, and Northwestern Medical School, 1939. Dr. Wood was a proud veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy for four years as ship's doctor in the South Pacific. Honorably discharged in 1946 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

He strongly believed in the value of Patriotism all of his life.

Dr. Wood interned at the W.H. Groves LDS Hospital from 1939 to 1941, and briefly practiced medicine with Leroy Kimball and Ulrich Bryner prior to entering military service. Return to private practice in April, 1946 and engaged in Post-Graduate Training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Johns Hopkins University, Boston Lying In Hospital and the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Wood received many professional accolades reflecting his outstanding ability as a physician. Fellow, American College of Surgeons (1951); Fellow, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (1952); Diplomat, American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1953); President, Utah State Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, (1962); Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, (1962-1966); Diplomat, American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1953). Elected President of Staff of LDS Hospital, 1966. Full clinical professor at the University of Utah, where he was awarded Outstanding Clinical Professor, 1976. In 1980, received the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology LDS Hospital Award and received the Honored Physician of the Year from LDS Hospital 1981. Elected Honorary President of the Utah State Medical Association, 1983.

Gene Wood and Ulrich Bryner founded Bryner Clinic in 1941, which was first housed in the Medical Arts Building, then from 1951 to 1961 at the Medical Center Building, and finally, the first Clinic location was constructed in 1961. Dr. Wood was a guiding force in establishing Bryner Clinic as a premier multi-specialty medical group in the Salt Lake Valley, where he practiced the highest quality medicine for 35 years until his untimely heart attack in June 1975 cut short his exemplary medical career.

Dr. Wood was truly loved, respected and admired by his patients, colleagues, and family. He had great integrity, will power, and inner strength while being gentle, loving, and courteous to all. He loved practicing medicine, his family, friends, and fishing the Gros Ventre River. "His word was his bond." He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Words do not adequately convey the importance of his life.

Lifelong faithful member of the LDS Church, having served a mission in the Washington, D.C. Temple with his sweetheart.

Survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Evelyn B. Wood; children, Charlene (Dennis) Harvey, Elizabeth (Roger) Allen, Paul (Deborah) Wood, and Evelyn (Ashby) Smyth; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held Sunday, at 6 to 8 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah. Viewing will also be held at 11-11:45 a.m. and Funeral 12 noon, Monday, Ensign Second Ward, 9th Ave and D Street, followed by interment at Murray City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society.
