Salt Lake County deputy sheriffs are investigating two Friday morning drive-by shootings that they say apparently are related.

The first incident occurred at 10:35 a.m. in front of Cottonwood High School, 5715 S. 1300 East, said deputy Steve Thomas. "The shooting was the result of a `staredown' between a 16-year-old boy on campus and another, also 16, in a black Blazer. During the contest, a gun came out from the Blazer and a round was fired into a crowd."The crowd scattered and the vehicle drove off, said Thomas. There were no injuries.

The next incident occurred 10 minutes after the first at a hamburger shop near 5600 S. Highland Drive (1100 East).

"There was a confrontation at a drive-through window apparently involving the same Blazer and another car," Thomas said. "The Blazer followed the other car down the street and fired a round into the back window, lodging the bullet in the back seat. Luckily, no one was injured."

Deputies tracked the Blazer to a Kearns house, Thomas said. "Having reason to believe someone was inside, they evacuated the neighborhood, called a SWAT team and surrounded the house. When they entered, deputies found it empty."
