I was distressed to read this past week, prior to the BYU-SDSU game, that there had been a lot of criticism in Utah of LaVell Edwards and the current football team.
I am a BYU alumnus of 25 years and saw two or three years of losing teams before the Edwards' regime began. So, I've known the good and the bad. The past 20 years have seen exceptional success of the program. Utahns have been spoiled, and when there's four losses in a row, armchair quarterbacks demand blood.I can't believe it. Why do people invest so much personal capital in the success of the BYU program? When there's a downturn, they feel that in some way their own worth has been devalued. Why? It's just a game, after all. There are so many more issues of infinitely greater import that demand our attention.
