Weber State withstood an 18-10 scoring run in the final nine minutes of play, defeating BC Dona Zagreb, 80-71, in an exhibition game, Friday night in the Dee Events Center. The Zagreb team is from the country of Croatia.
After leading by just five at halftime, 42-37, Weber State jumped out to a 70-53 lead in the first 11 minute of the second half, led by Robbie Johnson's eight points. Lewis Lofton gave the 'Cats their final 17 points lead at 70-53, on a long-range three pointer with 8:42 left. WSU did not score again until Ruben Nembhard made two free throws with 4:49. Zagreb closed to within six at 72-66. The Wildcats then pulled away in the final three minutes for the win.Weber State had five players in double figures, led by guard Ruben Nembhard with 16. Nembhard also added five assists. Johnnie Moore had 14 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Zagreb was paced by 6-1 guard, Goran Kalamiza who had 14. Zagreb is now 0-4 on their American tour and faces the University of Utah on Saturday evening.
Weber State opens its 1993-94 season next Wednesday night in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout, facing North Carolina State.
