One of the highlights of BYU's blockbuster exhibition "The Etruscans - Legacy of a Lost Civilization" has got to be the bazaar that accompanies the show. Resembling an Etruscan market, it's filled with a variety of imported items: original pottery from Bucchero, terra cotta vases from Italy, drinking goblets, bronze sculpture, crystal from Italy and Greece - and much, much more.

Bazaar manager Bev Cohen said the public response has been very good because this is a rare opportunity to buy items that are available only outside the country. As she walked me through the bazaar, she pointed to one of the most popular items in the shop - a stylized bronze sculpture of a horse. The same image appears on T-shirts.

She introduced me to statues of warriors, mirrors with figurative bases and clay figures similar to those found in Etruscan tombs. Also catching my attention were toys, animals, posters, mugs and notepads; baskets filled with herbs, food products, bread mixtures, bottles filled with herbs and vinegar and Italian cookies and candies.

There was also an abundance of jewelry; some were reproductions of pieces seen in the exhibit. There were also women's rings, cufflinks, key chains, etc.

The museum shop upstairs features art objects and books not related to the Etruscan exhibit - porcelain, crystal, jewelry, notecards, etc. In a few weeks, it will sell posters and notecards spotlighting works found in BYU's permanent collection.

You can visit both the museum shop and the bazaar without paying admission to the exhibit.

Both shops open at 9 a.m. The museum shop closes at 8:30 p.m.; the bazaar at 10 p.m.

- The Utah Arts Council invites artists to submit proposals for the Ogden Courts Building, a 1%-for-Art project. The selection committee's decision will be based upon the most appropriate solution to the sites designated as having the greatest impact on the facility. They include a sculpture-oriented environmental work in the plaza of the main entrance; a low/high relief surface treatment, also at the entrance; and an interior painting.

Deadline for picking up guidelines is Dec 15, 1993; deadline for proposal submission is Jan. 15, 1994.

Also, UAC is requesting proposals for the Winter Sports Park Facility (Bear Hollow Day Lodge), another 1%-for-Art project. This commission is open to artists living in Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming.

The facility's purpose is to provide training in winter sports - primarily the luge, bobsled, free-style acrobatic and ski jump.

Two options for the site-specific commission: Interior suspension related and exterior suspension or architecture integration. Deadline for picking up guidelines is Dec. 15, 1993. Deadline for proposal submission is Jan. 7, 1994. For further information about the proposals listed above, call David Holz, UAC design arts coordinator, at 533-4039.
