Utah kicker Chris Yergensen gets a hug from holder Jason Jones after Yergensen boomed a career-best 55-yard field goal with 25 seconds left to give the Utes a 34-31 victory over BYU in Provo Saturday. The Utes' win was their first at BYU since 1971 and gave them a 7-5 record (5-3 in the Western Athletic Conference) and a probable bowl berth. The loss put the 5-5 Cougars' string of 16 bowl appearances in jeopardy. After Yergensen's big kick, BYU quarterback John Walsh completed one pass, but three incompletions and Mark Swanson's interception on fourth down ended the threat. "There's no better feeling you get in the lifetime of a coach," said Utah coach Ron McBride. "This has been a burden on our back for a lot of years." (Stories on D1.)
