A healthy heart for every child is the aim of an educational guidebook and videotape program developed by the Arizona Heart Institute & Foundation.
The organization says nearly 80 percent of American children fail to meet low-fat diet standards set by the American Heart Association. The program, which includes a four-lesson guidebook and a videotape, is aimed at children from kindergarten through sixth grade. The guidebook sells for $25, while the video is priced at $10. It is suitable for use by both parents and teachers, according to the organization."We hope this program will break through the barrage of negative advertising aimed at children for high-fat, sugary snacks and sedentary games," said Dr. Edward B. Diethrich, founder and medical director of the Arizona Heart Institute in a press release.
The program emphasizes making healthy choices when deciding what to eat - salads instead of pizza or hamburgers, for instance. It has been used by Arizona public schools for the past four years.
