Using a water cannon, police spray demonstrators near the nuclear power plant in Brokdorf, Germany. In frigid weather, about 100 people tried in vain Monday to block the first transport of spent nuclear fuel from Brokdorf to England. Icicles clung to protesters' clothing in the 23 degree weather as a truck inched forward with its hazardous cargo of six fuel rods. The rods were driven to a nearby railhead en route to a reprocessing plant in Sellafield, England. British authorities haven't decided yet whether to let Sellafield begin operating. A recent report said Britons living around a power plant at Sellafield suffered high rates of leukemia and lymphoma.
