Augusta, Ga., the hometown of the "Godfather of Soul," officially renamed part of Ninth Street in his honor at a ceremony Saturday attended by about 5,000 fans."I thank God for the history to be made here today," Brown said.

Brown reminisced about his childhood in Augusta, recalling how elementary school classmates used to pay him a dime to see him sing and dance.

"All through his remarkable career, he never forgot Augusta, even though it seemed on occasion Augusta forgot him," said Mayor Charles DeVaney. "I think honors are especially sweet when they come from the heart and from the home."
