Michael Stich of Germany beat top-ranked Pete Sampras 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 in the final of the season-ending ATP Tour World Championship on Sunday to improve to No. 2 in the world.

Stich, who entered the tournament ranked No. 3, earned $1.24 million for his sixth title of the year. Sampras, the Wimbledon and U.S. Open winner, won $610,000 to increase his 1993 earnings to a record $3,648,075.

In New York, top-ranked Steffi Graf of Germany beat second-ranked Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the final of the season-ending Virginia Slims Championships on Sunday. Graf earned $250,000 to raise her women's season-record total to $2,753,837 and her career total to more than $13 million.
