Barbara Hope Jackson Miller was born on July 29, 1925 in Ames, Iowa and died November 21, 1993 at Logan Regional Hospital.

Violin was the guiding force in her life and, in fact, "Violin" was one of the first words she uttered. Her musical training began with her mother, Lois Jackson, who was a fine pianist and remarkable piano teacher. She strongly encouraged Barbara's musical training at every turn. Teachers who had strong influences in her violin training were Ilza Niemack of Iowa State University and Mr. Czerwonki at De Paul University in Chicago. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Utah State University. She taught at all levels of public school in Cache Valley and at Utah State University. She was a significant force, in association with Ray Haslam, in establishing the high quality of the Logan High School orchestra and Northern Wasatch Youth Symphony. At Weber State University she was instrumental in establishing the Golden Spike Youth Symphony. In the Salt Lake Valley she taught the violin and viola to the students of Peter Prier's American School of Violin Making. She was concertmaster of the Salt Lake Symphony, concertmaster of the Salt Lake Opera Theater, and for many years was concertmaster of the Nevada Opera Company at Reno. Her career as a private teacher has resulted in several fine professional string players, and she touched the lives of all those she taught.

She is survived by her husband Akeley Miller; two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Agler of San Diego and Janet Myra Killgore of Provo; her sister, Jeanne Kelly of New York City; her brother, Norman Jackson of Honolulu; grandchildren, Johathan Joseph Long (Killgore), Benjamin Moroni Killgore, Joanna Marie Killgore, Sean Thomas Agler, and Nicholas Akeley Agler.

She was preceded in death by her father, Philo Enos Jackson, and her mother, Lois Wentworth Jackson.

Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Logan, Utah, Second West and Center Street, at 12 noon, to be followed by graveside services at Logan Cemetery. Viewing will be at the Allen-Hall Mortuary Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Barbara J. Miller Scholarship Fund at the American School of Violin Making, founded and directed by Peter Paul Prier in Salt Lake City.
