A man died Monday morning at the apartment of Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a spokeswoman for Kevorkian's attorney said.
The spokeswoman for Kevorkian attorney Michael Schwartz, who refused to give a name, identified the man as Ali Khalili of Oak Park, Ill. She said Khalili suffered from bone cancer, but she didn't know whether Kevorkian was present when he died. She said he inhaled carbon monoxide.Royal Oak police Lt. Don Novak said officers were at Kevorkian's apartment at 9:30 a.m., but he declined to make any further comment.
Since 1990, Kevorkian, an outspoken proponent of physician-assisted suicide for the severely ill, has been present at 19 suicides in the Detroit area.
In an effort to stop Kevorkian, the Michigan Legislature approved a measure outlawing assisted suicide. The measure went into effect earlier this year.
Kevorkian is facing a January trial in one of the suicides that took place since then.
