The senior performance audit supervisor for the Utah legislative auditor general's office has been selected by Idaho legislative leaders to manage their new performance auditing operation.
The Legislative Council on Friday agreed to offer the job to Craig Monson following interviews with him and two other candidates. The performance evaluations supervisor, working with an eight-person joint legislative committee, will oversee the new campaign to subject government agencies to performance reviews in hopes of improving efficiency and saving taxpayer money.
The actual field work will be contracted out to private auditing companies.
Lawmakers accepted using a private auditor after Democratic Gov. Cecil Andrus vetoed creation of a state-paid performance auditing staff.
The council, which oversees legislative affairs when lawmakers are not in session, also named the oversight committee.
It will be headed by Democratic Sen. Bruce Sweeney of Lewiston and Republican Bruce Newcomb of Burley.
