The City Council has reluctantly approved the 1994 contract with Davis County for animal control services. The new contract included a 4.7 percent increase over the previous year, rising from $47,776 this year to $50,164 for 1994.

Council member Jerry Stevenson said he wants the council to look at alternatives to renewing the contract in 1995 because of the escalating costs.Stevenson, who will become Layton's mayor in January, said he has never been told where the money animal control collects goes.

Mayor James Layton said matters of cost should probably be addressed directly to the Davis County Commission.

Layton also said he believes the city gets a good deal with the contract and that the only alternative is for the city to start its own service.

Layton is not the only other north Davis city to question its contract renewal based on increasing costs. Syracuse in its Nov. 9 meeting tabled the contract and will meet with Sunset to see if that city can provide a better agreement. Sunset is the only north Davis city to have its own animal control department.
