Juab School District now requires a criminal background check on employees.
With the recent approval of the school board, the Juab District will do background checks on potential employees who have not had such a check in the preceding two years. The district may also require an existing employee or volunteer to submit to a background check where reasonable cause exists, school officials say.Utah law and rules from the Utah State Office of Education allow for such employee background checks.
"If a person is denied employment because of information obtained through a criminal background check, the person will be notified in writing of the reasons for denial or dismissal and will have an opportunity to respond to any information of a derogatory nature contained in the criminal background check," reads the new policy.
The information will be confidential. All who seek employment in the district must sign a waiver authorizing the checks. A criminal background check does not rule out other types of checks by the district, officials say.
