It takes six strong players to make a championship volleyball team, but the five teams that won high school state titles each had one player who stood out from the rest.
Weber's Caroline Steuer, Spanish Fork's Helen Hjorth, North Sanpete's Sadie Christensen, San Juan's Sunny Lee and Rich's Teresa McArthur have been named the Deseret News Most Valuable Players in their respective classifications for the recently completed high school volleyball season. The MVPs head the 1993 Deseret News All-State volleyball teams.Steuer, a junior outside hitter, led the Warriors to a brilliant 32-1 season and the state championship in the newly created 5A classification. She led the team with an 11 kill-per-match average even though opposing defenses keyed on her. Steuer had 23 kills in a match against Region 1 rival and state runner-up Bonneville.
"Caroline is so good because she's powerful and intelligent," Weber coach Dave Lewis said. "She is able to hit around a block or hit through a block or do whatever it takes."
Steuer is joined by Weber setter Angie Olson on the first team, while Warrior teammate Kara Campbell earned second-team honors.
Hjorth, a senior outside hitter, is a repeat All-Stater, having led the Dons to consecutive state titles. She is not only an outstanding hitter but is also a strong defensive player, passer and server.
Hjorth, a four-year starter, had a .497 hitting percentage as a senior, meaning nearly every other ball she hit was a kill. "She has all the tools. She's a great all-around player," Spanish Fork coach Wendy Weaver said.
Hjorth has been recruited heavily by colleges for her volleyball skills but has narrowed her choice to BYU or Washington.
North Sanpete won its first volleyball state title this year. Christensen played a major role in that accomplishment and was the near-unanimous selection by the 3A coaches as the MVP. Christensen was joined on the first team by teammates Tawnya Crumb and Kathryn McAllister, who made a fearsome threesome for the Hawks' opponents.
San Juan featured a balanced team in winning the 2A title. Four different Broncos received at least one MVP vote, but Lee, a senior outside hitter, garnered the most to win the honor, edging Jayleen Laws, Candace Johnson and Alycia Adams.
Winning an MVP award is nothing new to McArthur, who was voted the top 1A player in 1992 as well. The senior outside hitter was a unanimous choice after leading the Rebels to a second-straight state championship.
The All-State teams were selected by the volleyball coaches in the state's five classifications.
