J. Clark Ballard, 71, a member of the Utah State University Board of Trustees and former USU vice president for extension and continuing education, died Sunday, Nov. 21, in Hurricane.
Mr. Ballard, a native of Hurricane, was associated with Utah State University for a large part of his life, beginning at age 10 when he worked on a vegetable plot for the USU Agricultural Experiment Station.He was serving his second term on the USU Board of Trustees at the time of his death and had retired from USU in 1982 after spending 12 years as vice president for extension and continuing education.
Mr. Ballard is credited with bringing the concept that extension permeated all aspects of the university to USU's Extension Service. He also increased the university's international involvement tremendously. He was well-known for his kindness and good humor.
Mr. Ballard graduated from USU in 1947. He earned his doctorate from Cornell University and joined the USU faculty in 1950. Ballard worked on USU contracts in Iran and Bolivia and served as Director of International Programs at the university.
