The vice president of sales and marketing at the Salt Lake City Convention and Visitors Bureau has been appointed president of the Albuquerque bureau.

Dick Gilliland, 55, was appointed Thursday. He begins work March 1.Gilliland was among 150 applicants for the Albuquerque job vacated by Gary Grimmer, who took a similar post in Portland, Ore.

Kevin Murnane, who headed the Albuquerque bureau's search committee, said Gilliland was chosen for his background, experience and industry track rec-ord.

"He best suits the direction that the bureau and the board want to move in," Murnane said.

Gilliland has worked 26 years in sales for hotels and exhibit halls and as an association executive and meeting planner.

"I'm going to come in and be a listener," he said Thursday from Washington, D.C., where he was attending a trade show.
