Former U.S. Rep. Daniel Flood, 89, who resigned from Congress 13 years ago after pleading guilty to accepting bribes, was recovering from a heart attack Sunday and was in stable condition.
A spokeswoman at Mercy Hospital, where Flood was taken Thursday when he was stricken at his home in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., said Flood had been removed from intensive care and placed in a private room. His wife, Catherine, visited him Sunday afternoon.Flood spent 32 years in Congress and was known as the man who could get things done - from street lights to military facilities - for constituents in his northeastern Pennsylvania district.
But the Democrat ran into trouble in 1978 when he was charged with accepting $65,000 in bribes. After his first trial ended in a hung jury, he was stripped of his powerful committee posts.
