The captain of an Indian regional soccer team was killed when accidentally struck in the chest by an opponent's kick while going for a header in a match in northern India, sports officials said Monday.

Sundeep Dutta, 26, was captaining India's Railways against the state of Andhra Pradesh Sunday in the pre-quarterfinal round of the National Soccer Championships in Kanpur city, 215 miles east of New Delhi.Dutta tried to head the ball toward the rival goalpost when the kick's force carried him to the ground and left him unconsciousness. He died before reaching a local hospital, a sports department spokesperson said.
