A man with a knife sticking out of his back staggered into the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant at 1356 S. State Tuesday night.
Mason Bornstein, 22, Salt Lake City, was listed in serious but stable condition Wednesday at LDS Hospital with multiple stab wounds to the shoulder area and back.Salt Lake Police Lt. Roger Winkler said he hoped the man would be able to lead the officers to a suspect.
Initially, KFC assistant manager Jake Evans thought the man was having convulsions. "He didn't say anything about the (knife), I thought he was just having a seizure," Evans said. "I went to ask him what the problem was . . . and he collapsed on the floor, shaking."
An arriving rescue unit was prepared to treat a seizure victim but found the downed man bleeding from several stab wounds instead. "They got there and said, `Oh my gosh, he has a knife sticking out of him,' " Winkler said. Paramedics "scooped him up and went" once they saw the knife, said another officer at the scene.
Police followed a trail of blood nearly 100 yards around the corner to 54 E. Harrison Ave. (1351 South). Later, they took two witnesses to police headquarters for questioning and were looking for several others who may have seen the incident.
The restaurant is only a block away from where another man walked into a convenience store two weeks ago suffering four gunshot wounds to the upper body.
