Syracuse

In its March 9 meeting, the City Council:

- Listened to an update on plans for Antelope Island from Mitch Larsson, park superintendent. He said the causeway could open as early as May 1 and a $5 charge per vehicle is planned.

- Held a public hearing on the city's plan for the creation of a redevelopment district in the center of town, along 1700 South, with most of the area south of 2000 West and some north in the area of City Hall. There was no public opposition, and the council read a letter from the Davis County School Board supporting the district and passed various resolutions as an RDA board and as a City Council to officially create the RDA district in Syracuse.

- Discussed the problem of subsurface water drainage in Mountain View Estates, 1000 W. 2300 South. The city agreed to provide pipe to solve the problem, and the developer of the housing project will install the drain.

- Appointed Kelly and Sandy Hansen as co-chairmen for the city's centennial celebration, planned for 1995-1996.

- Tentatively set the night of April 22 at Syracuse Junior High for a parent awareness night for the city's anti-drug program, D.A.R.E.

West Point

In its March 9 meeting, the City Council:

- Approved up to $7,700 in accepting the low bid from Safety West Incorporated of West Valley City for various improvements in the city's manholes and sewer lift stations to comply with federal regulations.

- Approved an extension of the city's culinary water line to new homes along the western end of 1800 North. The council will also negotiate with the Hooper Water Improvement District to see if they'd like to sell a nearby water line to the city.

- Authorized 3-inch water connections for the city cemetery the new Bingham Park and 4-inch connections for the main city park.

- Received an update on the city's Fourth of July celebration plans. The City Council decided to let a committee cook breakfast on that holiday, rather than the council doing it.

- Mark Thayne, council member in charge of parks, said work is progressing on future development for Bingham Park. His committee will meet with the council at its March 23 meeting.

- Received an update on the safety problems of the Nery Samoya property along 5000 West. Samoya is finally working to install the safety fence around his ponds, as required by the city. Fence posts are currently being installed.
