Former President Richard Nixon greets Sen. Strom Thurmond at a birthday party in Thurmond's honor Tuesday night in Washington, D.C. The guest list was filled with liberals and conservatives, Republicans and Democrats alike. President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore attended briefly. Although the diverse group paid homage to Thurmond, who turned 90 in December, the real purpose of the event was to raise money in Thurmond's name for scholarships and medical research in South Carolina.
