A millionaire was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay an insurance company $1.65 million for hiring people to burn down his oceanfront house and collecting on his policy.
Daniel A. Vogel Jr., a former Myrtle Beach developer, was convicted in June of 10 counts of conspiracy, arson and mail fraud. He was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge David Norton.Vogel's house was destroyed on Nov. 23, 1987, after two failed attempts, according to testimony. He promised to pay three men $100,000 to have the house destroyed, trial witnesses said.
Charles Norman, once a chapter president of the Hells Angels in Winston-Salem, N.C., testified for the prosecution that he helped Vogel plan the destruction in 1987.
Four other people were also convicted.
