Communist North Korea accused U.S. troops Thursday of illegally firing volleys of bullets inside the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.

A North Korean official delivered a protest to the Military Armistice Commission, saying the gunfire was part of a series of provocations connected with U.S.-South Korean military exercises and was intended to worsen tension on the Korean peninsula, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency reported.The protest to the commission, set up to investigate violations of the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War, also said U.S. troops had illegally brought machine guns and recoilless rifles into the demilitarized zone and threatened North Korean soldiers.
