In memory of 1.2 million Tibetans who have died under Chinese occupation, members of Utah's Tibetan community fast and pray Wednesday on the grounds of the Utah State Capitol. For Wangdu, second from right, it brought back memories of an 11-day hunger strike in 1989 in protest of Chinese domination of his homeland. Wednesday marked the 34th anniversary of The 10th March Uprising in which 87,000 Tibetans were killed when they confronted Chinese troops. Utah's Tibetan resettlement community, which now numbers 60, also commemorated the anniversary with prayers and a candlelight vigil. On Friday, Utah's Tibetan women will mark the 34th anniversary of the Tibetan Women's Uprising in which 3,000 women were imprisoned and killed. Rapten Chazotsang, president of the Utah Tibetan Association, said he hopes this week's events will help free Tibet, which has been occupied by the Chinese since 1949.
