Rick Swenson, five-time champion of the Iditarod sled dog race, drives his team into the old ghost town of Iditarod, the 1,116-mile race's halfway point, Thursday. Jeff King led a breakaway pack of six mushers into the community at 1:10 p.m. Thursday and picked up $3,000 in silver ingots - 539 coins - for leading at the official midpoint between Anchorage and Nome. He drove into the checkpoint five minutes ahead of defending champion Martin Buser. Four other mushers - Swenson, Susan Butcher, Dee Dee Jonrowe and Rick Mackey - pulled in within 67 minutes of King. Iditarod features a $400,000 purse.
