Tens of thousands of dollars that the FBI believes financed the World Trade Center bombing was wired to the two main suspects from Germany, a federal investigator confirmed Friday.
The investigator told The Associated Press that bank records in New Jersey showed transfers from Germany to an account held jointly by the two Palestinian bombing suspects under arrest."We speculate that the money was used for the bombing, possible escape, safe houses and other terrorist activities," the investigator said.
Thomas Rindsfuesser, a spokesman for the German federal criminal police in Wiesbaden, said that at the request of U.S. authorities, German investigators would help trace the money.
The New York Times and New York Newsday reported Friday that investigators believed at least $8,000 was wired from Germany to the joint account of Mohammed Salameh and Nidal Ayyad.
