Officers arrested a West Jordan man Thursday accused of beating his pregnant ex-girlfriend "to make her miscarry."

The Kearns woman, 23, told police her ex-boyfriend is upset because she is pregnant with his child, but she refuses to have an abortion. The man told her if she didn't abort the child, he would beat her and make her have a miscarriage, a Salt Lake police report states. The 23-year-old man discovered Thursday that his ex-girlfriend was at her sister's Rose Park home and he pounded on the door, demanding to be let inside. When they refused, he kicked the door open, rushed inside and began beating and kicking the pregnant woman.

A witness said the man tried to hit her in the stomach, but she curled up into a ball to protect herself, the report stated. The woman received several bruises and cuts, but declined medical attention.

Salt Lake police later located the man and arrested him. But on the way to jail, the man "went berserk" and butted an officer with his head, repeatedly kicked the police car, then bit the officer's hand, drawing blood, according to the report.

After stopping to try to restrain him, officers said the man continued to fight and kick them until he was subdued with cayenne pepper mace and restraints were put on his legs. He was booked into jail for investigation of aggravated burglary and assault on a police officer.
