City officials are hoping Clinton's first redevelopment district will encourage more economic activity in their bedroom community.
"What we're hoping to do is see some commercial development within the next five years," City Manager Gary Uresk said about the City Council's creation of a redevelopment area in the geographical center of town. The city's original redevelopment area was 58 acres in size, but Uresk said several property owners on the northwest corner of 1800 North and 2000 West had expressed concern over the RDA and possible governmental involvement in their land and so the city downsized its proposal.
The current RDA plan includes a total of 22 acres with the majority of it on the southwest corner of 1800 North and 2000 West. An LDS Church is also located in the area. Another small section is at the northeast corner of 1800 North and 2000 West, west of City Hall.
Uresk said this RDA area doesn't represent the residential center of the city but believes it will someday as more homes are built. He said the Utah Department of Transportation has indicated a traffic signal, the first in the city, will be installed at the 1800 North intersection at 2000 West within the next few years.
The city hopes the RDA can get a share of the growth occurring in neighboring Roy, as well as in other portions of north Davis County.
Clearfield and Syracuse are also currently involved with some new RDA plans, and Uresk said that's probably because some recent changes in state laws make RDAs more attractive.
