BYU GYMNASTS TO COMPETE AT UCLA MEET

SHARE BYU GYMNASTS TO COMPETE AT UCLA MEET

BYU will compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Gymnastics Championships this week at the John Wooden Center on the UCLA campus.

The Cougars enter the two-day meet with a season-high score of 281.70 and a ranking of No. 4 in the nation.Cougar coach Mako Sakamoto points out that seven of the nation's top 20 men's gymnastics teams will compete in the meet topped by No. 3-ranked Stanford. The Cougars split a home-and-home series with Stanford this season.

Many of the nation's top individual gymnasts will also participate including BYU's Darren Elg, third rated in the country in the all-around and Richie Ellis, rated 17th as an all-around performer.

Elg has the best performances in the MPSF in both the floor exercise and the high bar.

Other top BYU competitors include Richie Ellis and Todd Jennings on the rings and Chris Reshetar and Chris Burch on the floor exercise.

Teams will practice on Thursday at the Wooden Center with team competition schedule for Friday, March 26th and individual competition will be held Saturday, March 27th.

The nine MPSF teams participating include Air Force, Arizona State, BYU, California, New Mexico, San Jose State, Stanford, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. WAC teams have been absorbed into this league since there is no WAC men's gymnastics league competition.
