AnneMarie Gwilliam watches as Jonathan Smith tries a reaction test that West Jordan Middle School ninth-grader Ben Newton (in back) designed for his personal computer. The project was one of nearly 350 entered in the the Metropolitan Science Fair, held this week at Salt Lake Community College. The projects displayed were the winners from science fairs held in schools throughout the Salt Lake School District, plus schools in Vernal, Park City and northern Sanpete County. Entries came from grades seven through 12. Now in its fourth decade, the fair included many studies of eye disease and perception, the Doppler effect, water wheels and energy, magnetic levitation and plant growth as affected by selenium and other elements in the soil.
