SHARE 60% OF UTAHNS APPROVE OF CLINTON JOB PERFORMANCE

Sixty percent of Utahns think President Clinton is doing a good job and half support his economic and budget package, the latest Deseret News/KSL poll shows.

Considering that Clinton finished third in Utah this past November - behind George Bush and Ross Perot - those numbers are impressive. In a survey conducted March 9-10, pollster Dan Jones & Associates found that 60 percent strongly or somewhat approve of the job Clinton is doing as president, 36 strongly or somewhat disapprove of his job performance and 5 percent don't know.

Asked whether they support or oppose Clinton's economic and budget proposals, which were debated in Congress this past week, 50 percent said they support the proposals, 41 percent said they oppose them and 9 percent don't know.

In the past two weeks, Republicans have been especially hard on Clinton's economic proposals, which include tax increases as well as spending cuts. The poll was conducted before much of the criticism was made.

Clinton still faces a long battle over his plan. He also has a tough fight ahead over health care.

And on that subject, 93 percent of Utahns think the U.S. health care system needs major revisions, Jones found. Only 4 percent think it is acceptable as it is.

And while growing numbers of Utahns lack health care, 90 percent of those questioned by Jones do have some kind of health insurance.

Of that 90 percent, 52 percent assess their coverage as adequate, but 26 percent don't think their coverage is sufficient for their needs.
