SHARE ICE FISHING SPOT OF THE WEEK: UINTAH LAKES

Directions - There are a number of lakes along highway 150 between Kamas and Evanston, Wyo. Road is routinely groomed in the winter.

Description - These are high country lakes that will remain ice capped into May and June. There are several that are accessible from highway in the winter by cross country skis or snowmobile...Mirror Lake, Moosehorn, Tea Pot, Lost Lake, Trial Lake. There are other lakes accessible by cross country skis or snowshoes off the main highway.

Fish - Cutthroat, Lake trout, rainbow

What works - An ice fly, in red black or chartruse, tied below a flasher tipped with a wax worm is a good choice. Also, power bait or a salmon egg on a salmon egg on a treble hook below a flasher. For a flasher use the blade of a silver spoon without the hook. Put hook 3 to 6 inches below flasher.

Details - Trout in the winter are not as active as in the summer and need somehting to get their attention, thus the flasher. Look for and fish around inlets into the lakes. Usually that's where water has been oxygenated. Start drilling holes in shallow areas and then work out. In deeper lakes, fish will be suspended, so fish different depths.

Notes - The Unitas are popular fishing spot in the summer, but few thin about them for winter fishing. Most of the lakes do have winter carryover. Access is, of course, a problem. Snowmobile is best. Take along a shovel to remove snow on some of the lakes to get down to ice. Lakes keep ice covering longer than most other lakes, but always chekck safety of ice before venturing out.
