David Shiner, a former street mime who's making it big on Broadway, says no one thought he was funny until he frisked a police officer.

"I was terrible," Shiner, who stars with partner-in-mime Bill Irwin in the comedy "Fool Moon," told People magazine. "People would walk by and say, `This is the worst mime I ever saw.' "One night, in sheer desperation, Shiner found a policeman with a good sense of humor and frisked him. Passers-by became the first of many laughing crowds to come.

It was the beginning of his trademark guerrilla street theater, which eventually landed him a tour with the Cirque du Soleil.
